Trespass was frequent at the south east corner of the Garden from the rear of the hotel at 9 Unthank Road. A simple security fence now prevents access by this route without intruding on the garden design.

We had experienced flooding at the bottom of the garden by the Italian Terrace and had to cancel the Jazz Picnic one year. The addition of soakaways in that location and near the Palm Terrace now reduce the rist of such events in the future.

The wall adjoining St. John’s Cathedral failed with a deep crack and this caused the closure of the path next to it and this area of the garden. The cost of the rebuilding was nearly £30,000 and was achieved in 2016 thanks for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which covered 50%.
The renewal was done by Dean Moulton and involved hand labour to access the site with all the materials. The result is a finish close to the original wall and the re-opening of the top woodland walk around this side of the garden.

The access to the garden is over the drive to the nextdoor hotel. Concerns raised about safety resulted in a six week closure of the garden. Local support for reopening was strong. It was covered in the local press and a petition was started on Facebook.
